Engel's  basement can be accessed by the elevator, or by a set of curving stairs behind the small door next to the main door in from west Campus Drive on the first floor. The stairs and elevator both open into a storage room, full to the ceiling of computers, electrical equipment, and much more cool stuff. There's even an old water fountain. There's a ramp down from this room into the basement mechanical.

The mechanical room has a door opening out into a little ventilation areaway (one of those big holes outside covered by a grate), and two small doors high up on the south and east walls with ladders up to them, leading into crawlspaces under Engel. These crawlspaces are considered to be "restricted areas" due to the massive amounts of friable asbestos everywhere.

The crawlspace accessible by the door on the east wall runs the whole length of that part of Engel, with clearance ranging from around 3 1/2 ' to 6', with steam pipes on the left and ductwork overhead. I had hoped to be able to access the steam tunnels at the point where the pipes leave Engel at the far end of the crawlspace from where we entered, but there really wasn't enough room for a person to fit through safely. Despite a pair of ventilation fans, it was nice and toasty down there.

Engel's roof is accessible via a closet on the top floor. The roof isn't really worth mentioning, but it has some nice views. It's possible to get onto Fralin's roof from here, by jumping down onto the lower roof of the bridge between the two buildings, then climbing over another wall. Someone up on Engel's roof would be visible to most anyone on the ground nearby, because the building is pretty low, and the roof doesn't have much of a wall around it.
